How difficult is the Masca gorge hike?
Thinking of doing the Masca gorge hike during our trip. I am reasonably fit but not an experienced hiker. Is it suitable? And what do we need to bring? Also, can we hike back up?

The hike is rated as moderate — it is not technical climbing but it is steep, rocky and can be slippery in places. If you are reasonably fit and comfortable walking on uneven terrain for 3–4 hours, you will manage it fine. Proper hiking boots are essential though, not trainers.
You cannot hike back up the gorge — the descent is mandatory. You must book a boat from the beach at the bottom to Los Gigantes before you start. The boat costs around €20 and you need to arrange it in advance. The last boat is typically at 4pm.
Essential kit: at least 2 litres of water per person (more in summer), sunscreen, snacks, a first aid kit with blister plasters and hiking poles if you have them. Arrive at the village by 10am at the latest to avoid the worst heat.
