Do I need to book Teide cable car in advance?
We want to go up Teide on the cable car during our visit in August. Do we need to book in advance or can we just turn up? And how early should we go?

Yes, absolutely book in advance in August — queues can be over 2 hours if you just turn up. Book on the official Teleférico del Teide website at least 2 weeks ahead. Morning slots go faster than afternoon ones.
We went in late July without booking and waited nearly 3 hours. Learn from our mistake! Also note that the cable car can be closed due to wind or cloud — if this happens you get a refund.
Go as early as possible, ideally on the first cable car of the day around 9am. The park is often cloud-free in the morning but clouds roll in from the north by midday. The views from 3,555m are absolutely incredible if you get a clear day.
Do not forget you also need a separate summit permit to go the last 163 metres to the actual top. That is free but must be reserved in advance through the national parks website. Only 200 permits per day.
