Tenerife's food scene runs from unpretentious local guachinches — small, often family-run bar-restaurants originally set up to sell homemade wine, now serving generous, cheap plates of Canarian home cooking — through mid-range seafood and grill restaurants along the coast, up to a handful of Michelin-starred kitchens reinterpreting Canarian ingredients at the top end.
Traditional Canarian cuisine is built around a handful of dishes worth seeking out specifically: papas arrugadas (small wrinkled potatoes boiled in heavily salted water) served with mojo rojo (spicy paprika sauce) and mojo verde (herby coriander sauce); fresh grilled fish (vieja, cherne), simple and unfussy; gofio, a toasted grain flour used in everything from soups to desserts; and goat cheese from the highlands, some of it internationally awarded.
Where you eat matters as much as what you order. Tourist-strip restaurants in the big resorts, with photo menus and touts outside, tend to be the most expensive and least authentic option; walking two streets inland in any town, or heading to a guachinche in the countryside around La Orotava or Tegueste, usually gets you better food for less money.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a guachinche and how do I find one?
A guachinche is a small, often seasonal, family-run restaurant attached to a vineyard or farm, serving homemade wine and simple, generous Canarian home cooking at low prices. They're concentrated around La Orotava, Tegueste and the wine-growing north; look for handwritten signs on rural roads rather than a polished website, and expect no menu in English.
What Canarian dishes should I try at least once?
Papas arrugadas with mojo rojo and mojo verde, fresh grilled vieja or cherne fish, gofio in any form, and a Canarian goat cheese with local honey (miel de palma) are the essentials most visitors end up loving.
Do I need to book restaurants in advance?
For casual and mid-range places, usually not, except on weekend evenings in peak season. For popular seafood spots and any Michelin-starred restaurant (El Rincón de Juan Carlos, Kabuki, M.B), book weeks or even months ahead.
Is tipping expected in Tenerife restaurants?
Tipping isn't obligatory the way it is in the US — locals often round up or leave small change, maybe 5-10% at most for good service in a sit-down restaurant. It's rarely expected in bars or for takeaway food.
Are there good vegetarian and vegan options in Tenerife?
Traditional Canarian food is fairly meat- and fish-heavy, but the bigger towns (Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, Costa Adeje) have a growing number of dedicated vegetarian and vegan restaurants, and dishes like papas arrugadas, gofio and salads are widely available almost everywhere.
What does menu del día mean?
Menu del día is a fixed-price lunch menu (usually a starter, main, drink and sometimes dessert) offered by most local restaurants on weekdays, typically far cheaper than ordering the same dishes individually. It's the best way to eat well on a budget at lunchtime.
