Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival runs for about two weeks, usually in February (dates shift with the lunar calendar, similar to Easter). Book accommodation in Santa Cruz or nearby La Laguna many months ahead — hotels fill up and prices rise sharply as the dates approach.

Most street parades, romerías and fiestas patronales are free and open to everyone. Some specific events, like Carnival's Gala de la Reina (Carnival Queen contest), require paid tickets bought in advance, while the daytime parades around them are free to watch.

A romería is a traditional pilgrimage-festival where locals in traditional Canarian dress parade ox-drawn carts decorated with produce to a local church or shrine, followed by communal food, wine and dancing.
