The south — Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Golf del Sur — is where you'll find the island's big all-inclusive resorts and five-star beachfront properties, built around guaranteed sunshine, pools and easy access to golden-sand beaches and nightlife. This is where most first-time visitors and families base themselves. The north offers a different, often more characterful, alternative: boutique hotels and converted colonial townhouses in Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and Garachico, closer to the island's historic towns, botanical gardens and volcanic-sand beaches, with a cooler, greener climate and a more local feel. Spanish star ratings are a reasonably reliable guide to facilities — a 4-star will usually have a pool, restaurant and often a spa, and a 5-star typically adds concierge service, multiple pools and higher room standards — but they don't always capture what matters most on Tenerife specifically: proximity to a swimmable beach, whether the pool is heated (useful outside summer), and whether the property actually faces the ocean or sits a few streets back.
