Tenerife's hotel scene splits broadly into two worlds. The south — Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Golf del Sur — is where you'll find the island's big all-inclusive resorts and five-star beachfront properties, built around guaranteed sunshine, pools and easy access to golden-sand beaches and nightlife. This is where most first-time visitors and families base themselves.
The north offers a different, often more characterful, alternative: boutique hotels and converted colonial townhouses in Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and Garachico, closer to the island's historic towns, botanical gardens and volcanic-sand beaches, with a cooler, greener climate and a more local feel.
Spanish star ratings are a reasonably reliable guide to facilities — a 4-star will usually have a pool, restaurant and often a spa, and a 5-star typically adds concierge service, multiple pools and higher room standards — but they don't always capture what matters most on Tenerife specifically: proximity to a swimmable beach, whether the pool is heated (useful outside summer), and whether the property actually faces the ocean or sits a few streets back.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between staying in south Tenerife and north Tenerife?
The south (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas) is drier, sunnier and built around big resort hotels, beach clubs and nightlife. The north (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava) is greener, cooler and more historic, with smaller hotels and easier access to natural attractions like Teide and Anaga.
Are all-inclusive hotels worth it in Tenerife?
They can be, especially for families who want predictable costs, but they also make it easy to never leave the resort — and some of the island's best food and experiences are outside hotel grounds. A half-board option often strikes a better balance.
Do I need a hotel with a heated pool?
Not in high summer, but if you're visiting between November and March, sea and unheated pool temperatures can feel cool — a heated pool makes a real difference to how usable the hotel's pool is outside the hottest months.
Which area is best for a family holiday: Costa Adeje or Puerto de la Cruz?
Costa Adeje suits families wanting guaranteed sun, calm swimmable beaches and resort facilities like kids' clubs and water parks nearby (Siam Park). Puerto de la Cruz suits families who want more culture and greenery alongside the beach, with Loro Parque and the Jardín Botánico close by.
How far in advance should I book a hotel for peak season?
For Christmas/New Year, Carnival (February) or Easter, book 3-6 months ahead — the best south-coast resorts sell out and prices climb sharply as the dates approach. July-August is also busy with Spanish domestic tourists.
Are hotel beaches actually private in Tenerife?
No — by Spanish law all beaches are public, so no hotel can technically close one off. In practice, some resort beaches feel private because access is easiest through hotel grounds and sunbeds are reserved for guests, but anyone can walk onto the sand.
