Tenerife's attractions divide roughly into three categories: natural landmarks built around the island's volcanic geology, family-oriented theme and animal parks concentrated in the south, and historic towns and viewpoints scattered mostly across the north and centre. At the natural end, Mount Teide — Spain's highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — dominates the island both physically and as its single must-do attraction; the cable car to near the summit and the lunar landscape of Las Cañadas del Teide crater around it are unlike anything else on the island. The Anaga Rural Park in the far north-east, with its ancient laurel forest (laurisilva) and dramatic ridge-top villages, is the other stand-out natural attraction, best explored on foot. For families, Siam Park and Loro Parque (near Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz respectively) are consistently rated among the best theme and animal parks in Europe, and are worth booking ahead in peak season. Beyond those big names, the historic centres of La Laguna (also a UNESCO World Heritage town) and La Orotava, plus whale- and dolphin-watching boat trips off the south-west coast, round out the island's must-see list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book Mount Teide cable car tickets in advance?

Yes — cable car tickets have limited daily capacity and regularly sell out, especially in July-August and around Easter and Christmas. Book online at least several days ahead, and note that reaching the actual summit also requires a separate free permit if you plan to hike beyond the cable car's upper station.

Is Siam Park worth the entry price?

Most visitors think so — it's consistently ranked among the best water parks in the world, with genuinely distinctive rides (like The Tower and the wave pool) rather than generic slides. It's not cheap, but it's a full-day activity that regularly beats visitor expectations.

Can you visit Mount Teide without a car?

Yes, via an organised day tour from most resort areas, or public bus (line 348) from Puerto de la Cruz or Costa Adeje, though buses run infrequently. A rental car gives you far more flexibility to stop at viewpoints along the way.

What's the difference between Loro Parque and Siam Park?

Loro Parque (Puerto de la Cruz) is a zoo and animal park, known for parrots, penguins and marine mammal shows. Siam Park (Costa Adeje) is a Thai-themed water park with slides and pools. They're both excellent but entirely different days out — many families visit both on separate days.

Is whale and dolphin watching in Tenerife ethical and worth it?

The waters off south-west Tenerife have one of the highest concentrations of resident short-finned pilot whales in the world, and sightings are extremely reliable — but choose an operator that follows the local code of conduct on distance and boat speed rather than the cheapest option, since some smaller boats crowd the animals.

How much time should I set aside for Anaga Rural Park?

A full day is the minimum to do it justice — driving the ridge road alone takes hours with stops, and any of the laurel-forest hiking trails need 2-4 hours on top of that. Staying overnight in one of the villages (like Taganana) lets you see it without rushing.
