The Canarians have a word for their festival spirit — chispa, a spark of joy — and Tenerife shows it off all year. The island's calendar runs from the grand carnival of Santa Cruz to tiny village fiestas that barely appear in any guidebook. Here is how to join in.

Carnival season (January–March)

The Santa Cruz carnival is the island's crown jewel and the world's second-largest after Rio. For two weeks the capital fills with parades, costumes, street concerts and the famous opening Gala. Our complete guide covers dates and logistics, and the practical tips page has insider advice for first-timers. The winter months in Santa Cruz are the island's loudest, most colourful time — see also our winter sun guide.

Holy Week (March–April)

In the south, Semana Santa is taken seriously: the Adeje processions wind through the old town with incense and drummers. In La Orotava, the famous Corpus Christi carpets of flower petals and volcanic sand cover the streets.

Spring and summer fiestas

The summer is a non-stop fiesta circuit:

Pilgrimages and romerías

La Romería de La Orotava is the island's most famous pilgrimage: oxen carts, folk dress and wine-fuelled dancing down the historic streets each June. These are the most authentic cultural events on the island, and the best time to visit guide can help you time a trip around one.

How to fit a fiesta into a trip

Check the events calendar when planning — a village fiesta or the carnival makes a perfect centrepiece for a day trip or a highlight of any itinerary. The quieter events are also a wonderful way to meet locals and taste the hidden corners of the island beyond the resorts.
