How Many Days in Tenerife? 3-Day, 5-Day and 7-Day Itineraries
Tenerife rewards visitors who do not try to see it all in one place. The island is only 80 km across, but it packs a volcano, a rainforest, colonial towns and a dozen very different coasts. The honest answer to "how many days?" is: at least four, ideally a week. Here are three itineraries that actually work.
3 days: the classic taster
- Day 1 — South coast. Land, settle in wherever you are staying, and take the afternoon on a top beach. Evening in Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas.
- Day 2 — Teide. Full day on the volcano: cable car, crater walk and the viewpoints of the national park. Book the cable car in advance.
- Day 3 — Anaga. Morning in the ancient laurel forest of the Anaga Rural Park, afternoon in La Laguna or Santa Cruz.
This works best with a rental car — the fastest way to compress the island. Otherwise base yourself in the south and take organised tours for Days 2 and 3.
5 days: add the west
Days 1–3 as above, then:
- Day 4 — West coast. Drive the spectacular TF-1 to Los Gigantes, the giant cliffs and Masca. A whale-watching boat trip from Los Cristianos fits well here.
- Day 5 — Wild coast or family day. Either the windswept beaches and surf of El Médano, or Siam Park for families.
7 days: north meets south
Add two more days and the island opens up properly:
- Day 6 — The north. Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and the green valleys, then Loro Parque or the botanical garden. This is the green, colonial north — a world away from the resorts.
- Day 7 — Chill or hike. Repeat a favourite beach, take a second hiking route, or explore a village like Garachico.
When to go and how much it costs
The best time to visit is shoulder season (April–June, September–November). A week for two with car, hotels and activities runs roughly €1,200–2,000 depending on style — see our budget guide for the cheap route.
The golden rule
Do not split your week into two bases if you can help it: the south is best for beaches and the north for scenery, but with a car every day trip is under an hour-and-a-half of driving. One base plus a car beats packing and unpacking. For shorter trips, our three-day itinerary and one-week itinerary offer ready-made routes.
