Vilaflor: Tenerife's Highest Village at 1,500 Metres

At 1,500 metres above the Atlantic, Vilaflor is the highest village in Spain and one of Tenerife's least-visited corners — a string of stone houses and almond orchards set in a forest of Canarian pines. In winter it can be a few degrees cooler than the coast, which is exactly why the islanders come up here to breathe.

The highest village in Spain

The village itself is the attraction. Vilaflor sits below the southern rim of the Teide crater at 1,500m, with the island's oldest and tallest Canarian pines in the surrounding forest and, on clear days, views that stretch to the coast and beyond.

Pine forests and miradores

Above the village, the Mirador de Chipeque at around 1,400m looks out over the southern valleys, while Forestal Park, the Canary Islands' largest treetop adventure park, threads zip-lines through the protected pines — a hit with older kids.

Almond blossom season

From late January into February the terraces below the village turn white with almond blossom — the Fiesta del Almendro en Flor, celebrated with local music and markets. Come for the blossom; stay for the quiet.

Fiestas and food

Vilaflor keeps its traditions alive. The Fiestas de San Roque y San Agustín in August fill the streets with romerías and live folklore, and the village's altitude makes it the perfect place to try the island's mountain cooking — for the classics, see our local dishes guide.

Practical notes

There is no bus service up here, so you'll need a car — our rental guide covers the paperwork — and the mountain air makes it a natural base for the best hikes on Tenerife and a Teide national park visit.
