Pet-Friendly Tenerife: Where Your Dog Is Welcome
Planning a Tenerife holiday with your dog is easier than most people expect. The island has dedicated dog beaches, a growing number of pet-friendly hotels and plenty of outdoor space built for dogs that love to run. Here is what you need to know.
Getting your dog there
The nearest entry point is Tenerife South Airport, where EU pet passports, microchip and rabies vaccination are all you need for the Canaries. The airport transfer guide covers getting from TFS to your resort; the Los Cristianos ferry page explains the option of coming by sea from mainland Spain.
Dog beaches
Tenerife now runs several official dog-friendly beaches, so you do not have to drive to empty coves:
- Playa del Confital (Santa Cruz) — the island's best-known dog beach, with a dedicated zone and easy access.
- Playa del Río (Vilaflor) — an open naturist and dog-friendly stretch on the south-west coast.
- Playa de Almaciga (Taganana) — a wild, dark-sand beach in the Anaga mountains, popular with locals and their dogs.
- El Médano — the windsurfing capital has a dog-walking zone beside its main beach, and the El Médano guide covers the whole area.
Hotels and where to stay
Many aparthotels and rural houses now welcome dogs, often with a small supplement. Look for "pets allowed" in the where to stay picks, and book directly so the property confirms the policy. The budget guide has tips on avoiding surprise pet fees.
Hiking and nature
Dogs are welcome on most of the island's trails, though they should stay on a lead in Anaga and Teide National Park, where protected wildlife lives. Outside the parks, the hidden gems list has plenty of quiet trails where dogs roam free. Check the best things to do guide for dog-friendly sightseeing ideas, and the day trips page for routes that work with a pet.
Practical tips
Summer heat is the real limit — walk dogs in the early morning, carry water, and remember many tap water sources are not drinkable, so bring bottled water for your pet. The winter sun months are the most comfortable for active dogs, and the how many days guide helps you size the trip. This is also a lovely island for romantic getaways where the whole family — dog included — feels welcome.
