Santa Cruz vs South — where to stay?
First time visiting Tenerife and trying to decide between staying in Santa Cruz or in the south resort area. We are interested in both culture and beach. What would you recommend?

It really depends on your priorities. Santa Cruz is a genuine Spanish city with excellent food, museums and the famous carnival atmosphere, but the beaches nearby are not great. The south has beautiful beaches but is much more touristy and resort-oriented.
I would say stay in the south and day-trip to Santa Cruz. The bus connection is excellent and takes about 45–60 minutes. You get the best of both worlds without sacrificing beach access.
A nice compromise is Puerto de la Cruz in the north — it is an authentic Canarian town with a lovely old quarter, the Botanical Gardens and the famous Lago Martianez. Not as sunny as the south though.
If you are there for more than 10 days, consider splitting — a few nights in Santa Cruz or La Laguna to experience the city, then moving south.
