Tenerife on a Budget: Tips for Saving Money
Tenerife has a reputation as a package-holiday destination, but it is entirely possible to visit the island on a tight budget without missing out on the best experiences. With some planning and local knowledge, you can enjoy everything the island has to offer while keeping costs well under control.
The biggest saving you can make is on transport. The public bus network (TITSA) is excellent and covers virtually every corner of the island at very low cost. A single journey rarely exceeds €3, and a 10-journey bono card reduces fares by around 30%. For the Teide National Park, there is a dedicated bus from Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz that costs under €10 return — far cheaper than a rental car or tour.
For accommodation, look beyond the tourist zones of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. Puerto de la Cruz in the north offers a more authentic atmosphere with lower prices, and self-catering apartments in residential areas can be rented at a fraction of the cost of beachfront hotels.
Eating local is the biggest money-saver on the island. Look for the menú del día — a fixed-price lunch menu available at almost every local restaurant. For €10–12 you typically get three courses including wine or water. Mercadona and HiperDino supermarkets are well-stocked with excellent local produce at very reasonable prices.
