Teide Cable Car Guide: Tickets, Times and What to Expect

The Teide cable car is the easiest way to see the roof of Spain. It lifts you from the mountain's base station at 2,356m to the upper station at 3,555m in about eight minutes — no hiking required, just a layer of warm clothing.

How to book

Tickets sell out well in advance, especially in summer and school holidays. Book online a few days ahead — the official attraction page links to the operator and current prices. An adult return runs about €41–47 depending on the season; the budget guide has ways to trim that.

Permits for the summit

You can walk the final 200m of height to the crater rim with a free permit from the Teide National Park office — slots release in advance and go fast. Without a permit, you stay at the upper station, where the views are already extraordinary.

When to go

The classic plan is to ride up before 11:00, when the mountain is still clear, then come down as clouds build in the afternoon. The best time to visit page maps the weather month by month; in winter, snow at the summit makes the upper station magical — check the webcam before driving up.

Getting there

You need a car or a tour. Driving from the south resorts takes about 1.5 hours via Vilaflor, from the north about the same via La Orotava. The driving guide covers mountain conditions, and there is a large paid parking lot at the base station. Coming from the airport? A guided tour bundles transport and skips the drive.

On the mountain

At 3,555m the air is thin — take it slow, drink water and bring sunscreen even in winter. The stargazing guide explains why the same summit turns into a world-class observatory at night, and the hiking guide describes the alternative for those who want to earn the view on foot. Base yourself somewhere convenient with the where to stay picks, and plan the ascent as a day trip with an early start.
