Fishing in Tenerife: Charters, Shore Spots and Fresh Fish

The Atlantic around Tenerife holds big-game fish within sight of the shore, which makes the island a serious angling destination between the beach holidays. Blue marlin, big-eye tuna and wahoo are seasonal regulars, and the local fishing culture runs deep.

Charter fishing

The classic option is a half-day deep-sea charter. Most boats leave from the marinas — Los Cristianos, the Santa Cruz harbour and the old fishing quay at La Caleta near Los Gigantes. The Los Gigantes & the West guide covers the village's long tuna tradition, while the El Médano coast has drift-fishing options for lighter tackle.

Shore fishing

No boat needed: Playa de los Abrigos and the rocky headlands around La Tejita are proven shore marks for bream, sea bass and smaller game. Ask locally before fishing near the busy swimming beaches — the northern harbours around Puerto de la Cruz are quieter and very productive.

Eating your catch

The most reliable way to enjoy Tenerife's fishing is on a plate. The seafood house Atlántida Mariscos in Los Abrigos is the island's most famous, and Tasca El Marino serves the old fishermen's classics. The food guide explains the cooked-then-priced tradition of Vieja and Cherne, and the local dishes list covers salt-fish specialities.

Practical notes

Spring and autumn bring the best big-game seasons; summer suits shore fishing. Most charters run from the things to do activities page, and a day trip from the south can include a morning afloat and an afternoon on the beach. Whatever you fish for, the island's version of a perfect day ends the same way — a table overlooking the Atlantic and something freshly caught on it.
