Kitesurfing in Tenerife: The Complete Rider's Guide

Tenerife's south-east corner has the perfect recipe for kitesurfing: a steady 15 to 25 knot trade wind for most of the year, flat water for freestyle, and warm Atlantic water. It has made El Médano one of the most celebrated kitespots in Europe.

The spots

Playa de la Tejita is the big one — a wide natural beach with a huge launch zone and side-onshore wind, best on west or south-west days. El Médano town offers flat-water lagoons for beginners and freestyle riders, while Cabezo beach suits intermediates. The south coast has secondary spots for gusty days.

When the wind blows

The trade wind season runs roughly May to September, peaking through summer; winter days are lighter but still rideable. The best time to visit page helps you time a trip, and the north vs south guide explains why the south-east is the wind corridor that matters.

Lessons and rental

El Médano beachfront is lined with IKO-certified schools offering beginner courses from around €60 for a taster session. Most schools bundle equipment rental, insurance and a beach shuttle. Bring your own board if you can — the packing list covers what to add.

Beyond the kite

When the wind drops, the area has plenty: the surf breaks around El Médano, walks through the Anaga mountains, and local seafood in the village. It is easy to build a holiday around the kite that everyone — rider or not — enjoys.
