Teide Sunrise Hike: The Most Epic Morning in Tenerife

At 3,715 metres, the summit of Teide is the highest point in Spain — and the moment the sun clears the clouds below it is pure theatre. The sunrise hike is Tenerife's most iconic trail, and with planning it is within reach of most fit walkers.

The route

Most hikers start from the Montaña Blanca trailhead at 2,320m, climbing past the cable car station to the summit in 5–7 hours. The final stretch to the crater rim is the hardest part — thin air, loose rock and cold. Descend by cable car to save the knees and catch the same views twice.

Permits: book early

Access to the summit crater needs a free Teide National Park permit, issued in limited numbers and usually snapped up weeks ahead. Book as soon as your dates are fixed — the park guide explains the system.

What to bring

This is a high-mountain outing, not a beach walk. The packing list for Teide means warm layers, gloves, a headtorch for the pre-dawn start and plenty of water. The temperature at the summit can be 15°C colder than the coast below.

When to go

The clearest skies come between May and October, and stargazing conditions on the way up are extraordinary. Winter brings snow and ice — check conditions before committing. Combine the hike with a stay at the park refuge for the best chance of clear skies. It is the number one thing to do on the island for a reason.
