Guide to the Masca Village and Gorge Hike
Masca is arguably the most dramatic village in Tenerife, perched high in the Teno Mountains at over 600 metres above sea level. The winding road to the village offers some of the most spectacular views on the island, and the village itself — a cluster of traditional Canarian houses clinging to vertiginous terraces — feels like a step back in time.
The Masca Gorge hike is a 4-kilometre descent through a narrow volcanic ravine to a secluded black-sand beach. The trail winds through dramatic rock formations, subtropical vegetation and seasonal streams. The hike takes between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on your fitness level. The trail is not suitable for children under eight or people with knee problems, as the terrain is rocky and steep in places.
At the bottom, a boat service runs to Los Gigantes — you must book this in advance as you cannot hike back up the gorge. The last boat typically departs around 4pm. Bring at least 2 litres of water per person, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots and snacks. There is no shade in the lower gorge.
The road to Masca is narrow and requires confident driving on hairpin bends. Alternatively, join an organised tour from the south which includes transport, the hike and the boat transfer. A guided Masca bundle often combines the gorge hike with the beach stopover at better value than booking the pieces separately.
