Healthcare in Tenerife: What Tourists Need to Know

Tenerife has solid public healthcare, and as a visitor you have clear options — from free emergency care with a European Health Insurance Card to private clinics for faster appointments.

Emergencies: the 112 number

Call 112 for any emergency — it is free, works in multiple languages and routes you to ambulance, police or fire. English-speaking operators are available at all times. For families and older travellers, knowing 112 before you need it is the single most useful fact.

Hospitals and clinics

The main public hospitals are Hospital Universitario de Canarias in La Laguna and Hospital Universitario de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, with Hospital del Sur near Costa Adeje covering the south. Private clinics (Hospiten, Hospitál Rambla) offer quick consultations from around €60-€90 without insurance.

Pharmacies and what's over the counter

Pharmacies (farmacias) are everywhere, open Monday to Saturday, and a rotation system keeps one open 24 hours in every town — the list is posted on every pharmacy door. Spain sells many medicines over the counter that need prescriptions at home, so ask before booking a doctor. The beaches are the main place you'll need one — jellyfish stings and safety around the water are the classic summer visits.

Insurance: EHIC and travel cover

EU/EEA residents get public treatment free with the EHIC card; everyone else needs travel insurance. It covers repatriation, which public hospitals cannot, and it is cheap — a fraction of a single private consultation. Planning your trip with a good itinerary reduces the chances you'll need it at all, but it's the kind of preparation that pays off quietly.

Policies come in all shapes: a single-trip plan covers a two-week holiday, an annual multi-trip deal pays for itself if you travel several times a year, and an activity add-on covers the hiking, diving and water sports you came for.
