La Palma Day Trip from Tenerife: The Isla Bonita
If La Gomera is the calm neighbour, La Palma is the wild one — a steep, green island with a volcano that erupted as recently as 2021 and skies so clear the whole island is a UNESCO stargazing reserve.
The crossing
Ferries run from Los Cristianos port to Santa Cruz de La Palma in about two hours (Naviera Armas) — a bigger commitment than La Gomera, so it works best as a long day trip or an overnight. Book a return and check the sailing schedule in advance; high-season crossings sell out.
What to see
The headline is the Cumbre Vieja volcano zone — the 2021 eruption area, still steaming in places, now a huge open-air geology lesson. Above it, the Caldera de Taburiente national park holds the island's rainforest, and the road from Los Llanos to the coast is a series of jaw-dropping viewpoints.
Why the sky matters
La Palma hosts the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, one of the world's great telescope sites. Even without a booking, the night sky from the island's high ridges is unlike anything over Tenerife's resorts.
Planning the trip
The ferry makes it a full day, so it pairs best with a long south-coast holiday rather than a quick stop. The island is far greener, quieter and wilder than Tenerife — a proper hidden gem for travellers who want more than the beaches.
