Windsurfing in Tenerife: El Médano's World-Class Sailing
Long before kitesurfs, El Médano was the windsurfing capital of the Canaries. Cabezo Beach hosted the PWA World Cup for years, and the same trade winds that drew the pros still blow through the bay today.
The classic spots
Cabezo beach is the heart of it — a flat, shallow bay with side-onshore wind that suits everyone from first-timers to slalom specialists. Playa de la Tejita offers bigger swell for wave sailors, and El Médano town beach is the relaxed freestyle zone. The conditions are complementary to kitesurfing — many riders do both.
Equipment and schools
Board and rig rental starts around €40 a day, and IKO/VDWS-certified schools along the beachfront run beginner courses in the flat-water lagoons. If you are chasing the legendary summer wind, book equipment ahead in July and August. The packing list reminds you what to bring for the water.
When to sail
The wind peaks May to September, strongest in summer; winter days are lighter but perfect for beginners. The best time to visit and north vs south guides explain the island's wind geography.
After the session
El Médano is a proper little watersports town — surf spots, laid-back bars and seafood, and beaches like Playa del Cabezo for sunset. It is the easiest base for a sailing holiday that mixes rig time with real island life.
