Shopping in Tenerife: Malls, Markets and Souvenirs

Tenerife's shopping scene surprises most first-time visitors. Beyond the souvenir shops there is serious retail: designer boutiques, working farmers' markets, and volcanic wines worth a suitcase corner. Here is how to shop the island properly.

Where to shop

The Santa Cruz capital is the island's retail heart — El Corte Inglés, the commercial district and the Sunday street market. La Laguna pairs UNESCO charm with independent boutiques and antiques, while Puerto de la Cruz keeps a laid-back northern shopping vibe. The big southern malls — Plaza del Duque and the complex beside Siam Park — cluster around Costa Adeje.

Markets worth waking up for

Saturday's market in La Laguna and the craft stalls in Santa Cruz are where locals actually buy. You will find hand-woven baskets, ceramic work and natural cosmetics. The hidden gems guide points to village markets most tourists never find, and the budget guide explains which stalls overcharge and which do not.

What to take home

Real Canarian souvenirs are edible or drinkable: volcanic wines from the wine guide, mojo sauces, almogrote and gofio from the food guide. The local dishes guide names the products worth seeking. For something deeper, buy Guanche-inspired craft — the Guanches section explains the symbols and pottery behind it.

Practical shopping tips

Shops open roughly 9.30–14.00 and 17.00–20.30, with bigger malls staying open all day. Sunday is quiet outside Santa Cruz. If your itinerary is packed, the things to do list slots shopping between excursions, the itinerary guide allocates half-days for it, and the best time to visit page flags the January sales. Compare prices in the malls before buying at airport duty-free — the same perfume is rarely cheaper on the way out.

Two rules of thumb: buy your artisan market keepsakes locally where the makers are, and compare duty-free deals before loading your trolley at the airport.
