Surfing in Tenerife: The Best Waves and Where to Learn
Tenerife is one of the most reliable surf destinations in Europe, with year-round swell on the south coast and consistent trade winds that make the south-east a world-famous spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Whatever your level, there is a beach for you — and windsurfers get their own dedicated guide.
El Médano: the watersports capital
El Médano is the heart of Tenerife's board culture. The long main beach faces the trade winds, which blow most afternoons from around 11:00, making it a magnet for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Beginners find gentle shallows at the eastern end, while experienced riders blast across the bay. The seafront is lined with rental shops and schools, and surf culture spills into the town — grab a post-session pizza at Wairua or El Timón.
South coast beach breaks
For classic shortboard-style surfing, head to the wave beaches of the south:
- Playa de las Américas — the most consistent surf break on the island, a sand-and-rock reef that works most of the year. Best at mid-to-high tide; big winter swells draw a local crowd.
- Playa de la Tejita — a wild, exposed beach near El Médano with a powerful reef break; experienced surfers only.
- Las Galletas — a mellow alternative with soft waves, popular with longboarders and beginners.
Lessons and seasons
The best time for beginners is summer (May–September), when waves are smaller and the water warm. Schools operate year-round on Playa de las Américas and El Médano; a two-hour group lesson with board and wetsuit costs about €40–50. The best time to visit generally applies — spring and autumn offer the best mix of swell and sun.
Beyond surfing
If you prefer being in the water without a board, the island is also excellent for snorkeling and diving. And the windsurf-and-sunset scene in El Médano hosts an annual surf-and-music festival that locals and visitors alike book around.
Practical notes
Bring a reef bootie for the rocky breaks. Rental (board + wetsuit) runs €15–25 a day depending on the shop.
