Where to Stay in Tenerife: Best Areas & Hotels for 2026
Where you stay on Tenerife changes your whole holiday. The island is a giant volcanic staircase — the Teide peak at its heart, golden-sand resorts on the sun-soaked south coast and a greener, older north. Get the area right and everything else falls into place. Here is our honest, area-by-area guide to choosing your base for 2026.
Costa Adeje: the premium south
Costa Adeje is Tenerife's most polished resort area — wide golden-sand beaches, five-star hotels and some of the best restaurants on the island. The stretch around Playa del Duque is the swish heart of it, with Playa de Fañabé a short walk away and the world-famous Siam Park at the back of the resort. For a holiday where the hotel is the destination, book one of the area's big names: Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque (5★, from €450), Royal Hideaway Corales Beach (5★, from €401) or Iberostar Selection Sábila (5★, from €400), the thalasso Iberostar Anthelia (5★), the adults-only Tivoli La Caleta on the rugged La Caleta coast and — for a rock-star party — the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife in Playa Paraíso. Best for: couples, honeymooners and luxury-seekers.
Playa de las Américas & Los Cristianos: the livelier south
If you want a livelier, more wallet-friendly south coast, this adjoining pair of resorts is the classic Tenerife. Playa de las Américas is the nightlife centre — bars, live music and a young crowd — while family-friendly Los Cristianos has a working port, a marina and gentler beaches. Reliable mid-range picks include Sol Arona Tenerife (4★, from €150), the bargain H10 Big Sur (4★, from €72) and Apartamentos Los Tarajales (3★, from €55), the beachfront H10 Gran Tinerfe (4★, from €120) at Playa del Bobo and the large Meliá Costa Atlantis (4★, from €147). Further up the scale, Gran Oasis Resort and the adults-only Sir Anthony and Hotel Cleopatra Palace offer big-resort comfort. Best for: first-timers, groups and budget travellers.
Puerto de la Cruz: the classic north
The north's original resort is smaller, greener and a little more cultured than the south. Its Playa Jardín, designed by César Manrique with black volcanic sand, sits at the foot of the town, and the famous Loro Parque is a short walk away. The centrepiece is the refurbished Gran Hotel Taoro (5★, from €150), with the long-established Hotel Tigaiga (4★, from €110) and the garden retreat Hotel Botánico (5★, from €280) close by, the reliable Hotel Semiramis (4★) with its tropical gardens near Playa Jardín and the family-friendly Hotel Puerto Palace (4★, from €100) in the quiet valley above the beach. Best for: couples, culture lovers and off-season stays.
Santa Cruz & La Laguna: the cities
For museums, restaurants and a real working city, base yourself in the capital Santa Cruz or the UNESCO-listed La Laguna, both on the north-east coast. Hotels here are city hotels rather than resorts, but the location is unbeatable for exploring: La Laguna Gran Hotel (4★, from €108) is a beautiful modern property in the old quarter, and Hotel Taburiente (4★, from €69) sits right by Santa Cruz's parks, and the sleek Hotel Contemporáneo and the park-side Hotel Príncipe Paz round out the capital's mid-range. Best for: city breaks, business and culture.
Los Gigantes & Puerto de Santiago: the dramatic west
This is the most photographed coast in Tenerife — the towering Los Gigantes cliffs rising straight out of the sea, with Puerto de Santiago's coves below. It is a quiet, scenic base and a great launch point for whale-watching trips. The best stays are Landmar Costa Los Gigantes (4★, from €74) and Barceló Santiago (4★, from €110) and the adults-only TUI BLUE Los Gigantes (4★, from €163) with its views across the cliffs to La Gomera. Best for: scenery, romance and serenity.
Golf del Sur & El Médano: golfers and windsurfers
The south-east corner is flatter and windier, which suits two very different holidays: championship golf and watersports. Golf del Sur offers the Wyndham Residences (4★, from €200) and nearby Vincci Tenerife Golf (4★, from €88), while the kite- and windsurf beaches of El Médano draw riders from across Europe. Best for: golfers, windsurfers and winter sun.
The rural north: La Orotava, Los Realejos, Garachico
For an authentic, off-resort experience, the northern towns offer boutique hotels in historic buildings — the lava pools of Garachico, the old quarter of La Orotava and the ancient Drago Milenario in Icod de los Vinos. Standouts are the Garahotel (3★, from €103) in the heart of Garachico and the 16th-century Hotel San Roque (4★, from €120), the restored 1565 Hotel Rural El Patio (from €108) on a banana estate and the traditional Hotel Alhambra in La Orotava. Best for: slow travel, foodies and return visitors.
Vilaflor: a mountain retreat
At 1,460 m above sea level, Vilaflor is the island's highest village — our dedicated Vilaflor guide has the full picture — pine forest, crisp air and the clearest night skies. The serene Hotel Spa Villalba (4★, from €95) is a wonderful escape from the coast, as is the all-suite mountain Hotel Las Águilas (from €120) wrapped in gardens. Best for: hiking, stargazing and silence.
Practical advice
Book early — Tenerife's hotels fill up fast in summer and over Christmas. And check which airport your flight uses: most resorts are far closer to Tenerife South (TFS) than the north airport, and picking the wrong one can add an hour to your transfer. Whichever area you choose, the island is small enough that the Teide National Park is never more than an hour away. Whichever area you pick, a quick hotel deal comparison helps you lock in the best rate before prices climb. Planning something extra special? Our luxury guide and weddings guide round out the five-star shortlist.
