Essential Travel Tips for Tenerife

Planning your first trip to Tenerife? Here is everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
Getting around: Tenerife has an excellent bus network (TITSA) connecting all major towns. Buses are cheap, air-conditioned and reliable. For more flexibility, renting a car is recommended — roads are well-maintained and driving is on the right. Avoid renting at the airport if possible as prices are significantly higher.
Money: Tenerife uses the Euro. ATMs are widely available. Tipping is not obligatory but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% at restaurants is appreciated.
Weather: The south is sunny year-round with very little rain. The north is greener and cloudier but still mild. If you want guaranteed sunshine, stay in the south. For nature and culture, the north is more rewarding.
Local customs: Lunch is the main meal of the day, typically eaten between 2pm and 4pm. Dinner is rarely before 9pm. Spanish time applies — things start late and go on late.
Language: Spanish is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, less so in smaller towns. Learning a few words of Spanish will always be appreciated.
Best time to visit: Tenerife is a year-round destination. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months. April-June and September-October offer the best balance of good weather, fewer crowds and lower prices.
