Complete Guide to Whale Watching in Tenerife
The waters off the south-west coast of Tenerife, particularly the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, are home to one of the world's most stable populations of resident short-finned pilot whales. Unlike many whale-watching destinations where sightings are seasonal, Tenerife offers reliable encounters year-round.
In addition to pilot whales, the waters around Tenerife are home to resident bottlenose dolphins. During summer months, you also have a good chance of spotting sperm whales, Bryde's whales and even orcas on passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Most tours depart from Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje) or Los Gigantes, at the foot of the dramatic Los Gigantes cliffs. Tours typically last 2–3 hours and cost between €25 and €50 per adult. Choose a boat with a maximum capacity of around 20–30 passengers for a more intimate experience, or book a catamaran trip to combine whale watching with snorkelling and swimming.
Look for boats that adhere to responsible whale-watching guidelines — they maintain a safe distance from the animals and do not pursue or surround them. Companies such as Frank's Boat Trips, Katrin Yachts and Freebird Cruises are consistently well reviewed. Book in advance during peak summer months and consider morning departures for calmer seas. If you're comparing operators, this catamaran deal is worth checking before you book. If you'd rather go beneath the waves, our scuba-diving guide covers the island's best dive sites.
