Digital Nomad Tenerife: Work, Surf and Live in the Sun
Tenerife has quietly become a fixture on the digital-nomad map. The maths is simple: fibre internet almost everywhere, 20°C winters, a time zone that suits European and American workflows, and living costs well below the mainland. It is not a scene like Bali — it is calmer, and that is part of the appeal.
Where to base
- El Médano — the surfer-town vibe, cheap studios near the beach and a genuine young international crowd.
- La Laguna — a university town with quiet streets, the fastest fibre and a strong café scene; a favourite for writers.
- Santa Cruz — the capital: co-working spaces, every service, and the best nightlife if you want a city rhythm.
- The south resorts — great if you want sun, pool and beach after the laptop closes, at the price of living in touristland.
Cost of living
A room in El Médano or La Laguna runs €450–650 a month; a studio €700–900. Coffee is €1.50–2, a lunch menu €10–12, and a month of groceries for one person about €250–350. Our budget guide gives the full breakdown, and the where to stay page compares areas in detail.
Practicalities
- Internet — fibre covers the main towns and most resort apartments; check the building before booking, and ask about the upload speed for video calls.
- Getting around — the public bus network is cheap and reaches everywhere, though a rental car unlocks the quieter corners.
- Coworking — dedicated spaces exist in Santa Cruz and La Laguna, with hot-desks from €8–12 a day; the beachside Café del Mar in Los Abrigos is the classic lunch-with-a-laptop spot.
- Health — the public health system is excellent; with a Spanish NIE and social-security registration, care is free.
When to come
Year-round, but the best time to visit for a long stay is autumn or spring, when it is quiet enough to focus and warm enough to enjoy it. Winter is lovely too — see the winter sun guide — but the resorts get busier. Whatever the season, the food scene keeps working nomads happy, and the north keeps its authentic pace year-round.
